Renny Harlin teases the beginning of the "Strangers Universe"

The upcoming Strangers Trilogy seems to be only the beginning of an exciting journey, with director Renny Harlin teasing the beginning of the “Strangers Universe” in a recent interview with ComicBook.

The Strangers Trilogy is set to be released in 2024, and if Lionsgate agrees to a condensed schedule we’ll be getting all three movies next year. Chapter 1 is currently being promoted and will play out similarly to the original film with Madelaine Petsch playing a young woman, Maya, who is is moving cross-country with her boyfriend, played by Froy Gutierrez, and after stopping at a remote vacation rental in the woods, they are attacked by a gang of masked killers.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, Renny Harlin was asked about where he sees the franchise going after Chapter 3, he responded: “Thanks for asking that question because I definitely see more movies and it’s almost like – that’s why I don’t even call it a trilogy – I call it the first three movies of the Strangers Universe”. He went on to add that Chapter 3 will not provide a conclusion, if anything it’ll leave the viewers with unanswered questions and wanting more.

“And the way the third movie ends, if people thought that the original movie ended in a titillating way because Liv Tyler sort of gasps in the end of that. And you question, like, ‘Did she live, what happened?’ If you thought that was thought-provoking, I think that when the third movie ends, you are like, ‘Oh my God, what’s, what’s gonna happen now?'”. Harlin continued, going on to state that the trilogy will focus more on Maya and her journey as opposed to just the Strangers and their journey like the structure of the original two films.

“This is really an exploration of a young woman who’s been the victim of incredible violence and an exploration of what happens to a personal mentally and physically. How do you survive it? Where do you go? And in the end of the third movie, you have more questions than answers and I definitely see a bunch of new movies coming after that, and just continuing her stories. So instead of going the route of the original film and the sequel of it, the sequel was about the strangers attacking some other random people. Our focus is our central character and her journey and where she’s gonna go.”
