The First Look at The Strangers: Chapter 1

Published by: IsTamaraHome.net
Date Published: 12 October 2023
Director Renny Harlin and Producer Courtney Solomon gave us our first look at The Strangers Trilogy at New York Comic Con today, and here is everything that was revealed… including a brand new clip released not long after the panel.
Whilst I wasn’t able to watch the panel as it was not streamed live like I hoped it would be, there’s been enough media coverage around it to tell me everything I needed to know about how the panel played out so I can share that with all of you.
The panel featured Renny Harlin and Courtney Solomon and was moderated by Josh Horowitz, and Courtney and Renny were eager to share all they could about Chapter 1 of the trilogy.

Currently, Chapter 1 is scheduled for release in 2024, and if Lionsgate agrees to the condensed release schedule, the entire trilogy will see the light of day in 2024. The panel mainly focused on Chapter 1, with Renny and Courtney keeping their lips sealed about any of the plot related to Chapters 2 and 3.

PRODUCTION

The current plot synopsis for Chapter 1 is: “Madelaine Petsch stars as a young woman on a road trip with her fiancé (Froy Gutierrez). But when they stop at a remote vacation rental in the woods, they become the prey of a vicious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason, and must use courage and cunning to survive one long, terrifying night.”

Courtney explained the motivation to create the new trilogy and just how the plans came to light: “A friend of mine called me and said he had the rights to do more Strangers movies, and he asked if I wanted to remake [it]”. As for the script, it was written in the style of one movie and it was 288 pages long. Renny admitted to being taken aback when the script was given to him.

“I called Courtney after I read it in about nine hours, and he explained there was a plan to go much deeper than just a reboot”, he said. “And I begged to do it. I wanted to do it for the fans, and for the new generation that perhaps had not seen the original.”

“We looked at the original movie for inspiration, and the sequel. We wanted to reboot the original and pay homage to it, and ended up with the 288-page script that Renny always reminds me of”, Courtney added. So the script, by design, was written the way it was so that it could be broken up into three movies. As for the time frame of the film, they three span only a few days. On the time frame, Harlin stated: “The very first scene of the second film follows the very last scene in the first movie, and the first scene in the third film follows the last scene in Chapter Two”.

CASTING MADELAINE PETSCH

On casting the role of Maya, Harlin and Solomon considered many actresses who auditioned — but Madelaine Petsch was the one who really stood out to them. “When we did the interview with Mads… she interviewed us. The Strangers is her favourite horror movie and she had 21 pages of notes for the interview. Renny and I looked at each other about 5 minutes in, and we knew”.

It wasn’t a matter of replacing Liv Tyler who “did an incredible job in the first movie”. They were after something different. Someone who could be a regular person, appear vulnerable, and go through this ordeal. Harlin went on to state that “when we shot the film, we felt we had won the lottery. I don’t think any other actor could do what she does in this film.”

THE MASKS

Renny Harlin is just as much a Strangers fan as the rest of us, and he knew that the masks had to be perfect. “They are iconic” he said. “There is no secret vault in Hollywood where we can go and get the Strangers masks. We had to make them from scratch.” Harlin only wanted minor updates for the masks to set them apart from the masks used in previous films, but at the same time he ensured that they remained faithful to the original masks.

“A lot of people failed” at making the masks. “We needed to them to work in all lighting situations. The masks were not finished until the first day of filming”. Each mask was tailored to fit the actor’s face perfectly, and there were only two masks per Stranger. “If one had broken, we would have been screwed”, Harlin admitted.

SNEAK PEEKS AND POSTERS

Three sneak peeks were shown to the audience of the panel and two posters were shared with them too. The posters, designed by Greg Ruth and Matt Ryan Tobin, will not be made available outside of NYCC as they were exclusive to the event, a source confirmed to me. Only one of the sneak peek shown has been published online.

The first sneak peek, the one available online, shows Maya peaking through the door to see Dollface asking if Tamara was home, despite them previously telling her that there was no Tamara. The second sneak peek showed Maya and Ryan escaping their holiday rental through a crawlspace, and the final sneak peek showed Maya hiding in the woods from The Strangers.

FUTURE INSTALLMENTS

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Harlin stated that he “can’t wait to make the next three movies because I just think that we do something so interesting here; personally, I can’t wait to see where it goes after this”. This tell us that the trilogy isn’t the end of the Strangers in Harlin’s eyes and if it succeeds, we could have more installments of The Strangers franchise coming our way!
