'The Strangers: Chapter 1': News Revealed at WonderCon

Published by: IsTamaraHome.net
Date Published: 31 March 2024
Madelaine Petsch, Renny Harlin, Froy Gutierrez and Courtney Solomon all took to the stage at WonderCon 2024 to break even more details about The Strangers: Chapter 1 and the trilogy as a whole. Here is everything they revealed…
The image is a wide format picture featuring three different stylized masks side by side against a dark background. On the left, there is a pristine mask with a pale face, black hair, exaggerated black eyelashes, rosy cheeks, and bright red lips, giving the appearance of a classic theatrical or carnival mask. In the center is a worn and tattered mask, suggesting decay or neglect, with frayed edges, visible stitching, and holes instead of eyes. The right shows a mask similar in style to the first but appears faded, as if worn by time or shadow, with hollow eyes and a pipe between the lips. Across the bottom right corner is the text "ISTAMARAHOME.NET," possibly a watermark or signature.

New Character Posters

For starters, prior to the panel the group took the time to sign autographs for the fans — specifically on new character posters of each of The Strangers. These quickly made their way onto the official social media accounts for the film. Each poster gives an up close look at the Strangers against the backdrop of the woods of Oregon.

Who is Tamara?

The question that has been on everyone’s mind since 2008 — who the f### is Tamara? Why are they always asking for her? Is it a name they picked out of a hat or is she someone connected to the Strangers? That question is finally going to be explored in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. On top of that, those subsequent chapters are going to explore what makes the Strangers “tick”. But without ever hearing a single word spill from their mouths.

A Remake? A Reboot?

Another big question that everyone has been wondering, especially since the trailer for Chapter 1 released, is will Chapter 1 be a remake or a reboot? Well, the answer is neither. Chapter 1 is re-telling the original film to fit it into the new story that has been crafted for the trilogy. On this, Courtney Solomon stated they wanted to “retell the original, not remake it, just retell it in our own way to serve as what ended up being a giant movie. The script was 280 pages when he did it. And then it’s like a four and a half hour movie, so we had to divide it into three chapters because it was just too long to play in movie theaters and nobody could actually sit and watch it.”
Further to that point, Renny Harlin went on to say:
“But to answer your question, it’s a retelling of the original. We loved where the Strangers sort of came from in that original, and what that mythos became. And so that’s where we wanted to start at in telling sort of a much broader story that actually follows one character through what I would call a real downward slope.”

A Challenge for Madelaine

Filming the trilogy was nothing short of a challenge for Madelaine Petsch. Speaking on this, she stated “we didn’t have the luxury of time on these films. We had 52 days to shoot three of them.”
“And so, when I got our 280-page script in my inbox, I felt like, ‘Who could possibly think they could take on The Strangers? It’s amazing. I would call it a perfect horror film. Can’t be redone.” Madeleine went on to say that: I spoke with Renny and Courtney, and we discussed what we were trying to do with Maya, the character that I play. She is just going to do a job interview in Portland, and her partner’s car breaks down. And they have to kind of make it through the night , survive the night in these incredibly crazy circumstances. But that’s just a launch pad for the story we’re trying to tell. The first chapter is just the beginning , and that is what excited me most about this.”

Chapter 2 Release Date

Another fact confirmed is that Chapter 2 will be coming sometime in the fall of 2024, maybe in time for a Halloween release. The official date is not confirmed but it will be during that three month period.

A New Sneak Peek

An exclusive new sneak peek was also screened at the panel. This sneak peek showed Madeleine’s character, Maya, getting stalked in the forest and hiding in the bushes from Scarecrow. Apparently there is a lot of tension in this clip.

Other Details Revealed

Other details revealed to the WonderCon panel audience were:
  • The scene where the axe comes flying through the door was filmed practically, and it was one of the hardest scenes to film.
  • The movies take place over a period of three days.
  • The film was originally four and a half hours long, hence why it was split into a trilogy. It was filmed back-to-back-to-back as one film but was always intended to be a trilogy.
  • Renny Harlin stated that “we are not copying the original, we are not remaking the original”
  • Renny Harlin stated that the trilogy is an amalgamation of real-life murders, but not based on any specific cases.
And that’s all that was shared at the panel. Chapter 1 is just over a month away, in the meantime keep checking out the trailer and supporting the social channels for the film and for IsTamaraHome.net, where you can get all of your updates on the upcoming trilogy!
