Lionsgate is behind the remake (contradicting
previous information given to us by an anonymous source back in February), with Renny Harlin set to direct, as
previous reported”, and
Riverdale star,
Madelaine Petsch set to star as the new Strangers scream queen. Starring alongside Petsch is
Gabe Basso and
Froy Gutierrez.
The new trilogy will follow Petsch and Gutierrez as a couple who are driving cross-country to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Oregon, they seek refuge in a secluded Airbnb for the night, where our three favourite Strangers pay them a visit to terrorise them from dusk till dawn. The script is penned by
Alan R. Cohen and
Alan Freedland, with Lionsgate distributing the film worldwide.
The remake is being produced by horror legend Courtney Solomon, who stated “When setting out to remake
The Strangers, we felt there was a bigger story to be told, which could be as powerful, chilling, and terrifying as the original and could really expand that world”. Additional producers include Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Charlie Dombek and Alastair Burlingham. Executive producers include Andrei Boncea, Dorothy Canton and Roy Lee, who also produced the previous Strangers films.
On his role in creating the new films, Renny Harlin stated “My mother instilled the love of movies in me through the world of Hitchcock and other masters of suspense and horror. My breakthrough to Hollywood happened with the success of
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4. It is only fitting that I get to return to my favorite genre with the incredibly well written trilogy of
The Strangers. The characters and the storyline are all grounded in reality and offer me an endless tapestry of haunting visuals in bringing these movies alive.”
Production is currently underway in Bratislava, with Petsch stating on Instagram “back to running through the European woods in the middle of the night”. And pinch us, because we can’t wait!
