The Strangers Trilogy - A Full Cut Could Be On The Way

As was stated back before Chapter 1 was released, Lionsgate have gone ahead with their plans to put together a Trilogy cut of The Strangers, as it was filmed and intended to be seen. Screened to an exclusive group of viewers in Los Angeles on Thursday night, producer Courtney Solomon stated they had finalised it 24 hours before the event and that this was the first time it was being screened publicly. It’s very likely that this was not the only screening, and once Chapter 3 has had its time in theatres, it will get its own release, either theatrically or digitally.
Back when the trilogy was conceived, it was one 270+ screenplay titled “The Strangers” (a screenplay I would very much like to get my hands on one day). It was never written as three separate movies, one long continuous movie. As it couldn’t be released as one 4.5 hour movie, the decision was made to slice it into three chapters to be released over a short period in theatres. Obviously there was a bit of a delay with Chapter 2 being released and there was the matter of reshoots for both Chapters 2 and 3 which changed a fair chunk of the story and removed aspects from the original shoot (Jeff Morrel and Ghostskull and Witchface for example), but still despite all that Renny Harlin and Courtney Solomon always intended to release their full cut of the movie.
According to a video released from the event, the trilogy cut re-added elements of all chapters that were removed from their individual theatrical cuts, as far as I’m aware it sticks true to the stories of each individual chapter, so don’t expect to be seeing Jeff Morrel’s story re-added or our lost friends Ghostskull and Witchface (I’ll eventually try to find out what their deal was). The trilogy cut begins with Chapter 1, goes halfway through Chapter 2 and then has an intermission before picking up with the rest of Chapter 2 and the entirety of Chapter 3. I’m extremely excited to see this cut, so I’m hoping they do eventually release it publicly, even if it’s only a digital release, so we can see the trilogy as it was intended.

The Universe-clash Cleared Up

In other news, Courtney Solomon has cleared up a some long standing confusion that he quotes as being “so misunderstood”. If you think back to New York Comic Con, you’ll recall a comment from Renny Harlin that he envisions the Strangers in the trilogy as the same Strangers from the original film. It seems that statement was either made in error or misspoken as Courtney Solomon has now cleared up this confusion and stated that these Strangers are not the Strangers from the original film at all.
“Our Strangers universe, this trilogy, is not the original Strangers or Prey at Night”, stated Solomon in an interview at the Trilogy Cut premiere event on Thursday. “They live in one place, we made something different and used the storyline of the original. We’ve never given up who the original Strangers were. We haven’t given any backstory”. I’ve always stuck true to the fact that the Trilogy was its own universe and these Strangers existed outside of the Strangers from the Original/PAN universe, no matter how much confusion I always would say they were their own characters, as it would’ve confused the timeline if they were the same.
And if you want a final statement on this, Solomon himself stated that the Trilogy is “a completely different storyline and completely different timeline and universe”. So there you have it, an almost two year confusion put to rest, and now I have some website changes to make.

When will the Trilogy cut release?

The Strangers: Chapter 3 is due for release on February 6th and is marked as the “end of the road” for the trilogy. There is no word yet on whether the Trilogy cut will see the light of day outside of the exclusive screening from Thursday but Courtney Solomon is very aware about the fans of the franchise and knows they want to see it, so I’d say there’s a very good chance of seeing it, even if it is only a digital release. Rest assured, if it does get confirmed for release, you’ll see me posting non-stop, so keep an eye on the site and our social channels.
