Where is The Strangers: Chapter 2?

We were expecting The Strangers: Chapter 2 in Fall of 2024, but we’re halfway through September with no news on the marketing front. With a distributor confirming a 2025 release — when can we expect The Strangers: Chapter 2?
At CinemaCon 2024, Courtney Solomon announced that Chapter 2 would be coming sometime in the Fall of 2024, there was no plan for big gaps between the release of the three Chapters. On the commentary track for The Strangers: Chapter 1, Courtney and Madelaine Petsch confirmed that they’d finished editing Chapter 2 and were moving onto Chapter 3. So what’s with the delay of Chapter 2’s release? If it’s all ready to go, where’s the marketing? Why is everything silent on Lionsgate’s part for a highly anticipated movie? Numerous factors have led to the delay of Chapter 2.

Reshoots

Following the release of Chapter 1 and its box office success, allegedly Lionsgate was impressed with the return and so they decided to throw extra money into the Trilogy’s budget to complete some reshoots for Chapters 2 and 3. It is unknown whether this was to improve the story or change it because there was something they were unhappy with. A source close to production confirmed that when they wrapped in 2022, filming for Chapter 3 wasn’t entirely complete and so the reshoots didn’t surprise them. So we know they were completing certain elements of the film.
As for the cast who were present for the reshoots, we know for certain that Madelaine Petsch was there based on her TikTok channel. Through Madelaine’s photographer, Andie Jane, we also know that Gabriel Basso was back on set in Bratislava. But we don’t know which other cast members were involved. Allegedly, they were using stunt doubles to fill the roles of The Strangers rather than bring those cast members back — but this is all hearsay as I can’t validate the legitimacy of the source.
I have a couple of plot points that were changed through the reshoots, but until I can verify the legitimacy of them (i.e. by seeing Chapters 2 and 3), I have chosen to hold onto them. Its also important to note that the leaks that popped up a few months ago had no connection with the reasoning for the reshoots.

Other Lionsgate Horror Releases

Since the release of Chapter 1, Lionsgate have had multiple other horror films to release in between that inevitably delayed the release date. Following Chapter 1, Lionsgate shifted focus to their remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgård. This was released in August 2024, meaning the July-August marketing period was focused on that. Next up are two movies set for a release between each other, Never Let Go starring Halle Berry, and Bagman starring Sam Claflin, these have taken up Lionsgate Horror’s marketing for the August-September period, the period where we should’ve expected a trailer for Chapter 2 in order to uphold the Fall release date.
After the release of these, it doesn’t appear that there are any films on Lionsgate Horror’s upcoming schedules, so hopefully once the periods for these films die down Lionsgate can shift focus to Chapter 2 and start the marketing campaign for it. Again, this is just my theory so don’t take it as verbatim.

Is Lionsgate Cancelling the Trilogy?

I know a lot of people in my DMs have been concerned that Lionsgate may cancel the trilogy all together due to the reviews of Chapter 1. But let me remind you, Lionsgate did reshoots for the trilogy, this requires extra money to fly the cast to Bratislava again, return to locations, accomodation for cast and crew, paying the cast and crew, would they really do all of this just to cancel the trilogy? No. As I said, Lionsgate were impressed with Chapter 1’s success so gave more money to the budget, that’s not the attitude they’d take just to cancel the trilogy. So don’t fear, we are getting The Strangers Chapters 2 and 3.

So when is the release date?

We don’t have an exact period of date for The Strangers: Chapter 2, but we do know that the Australian distributor for the film have stated that the film is coming in 2025, so sometime next year. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t in the first quarter of the year. If marketing begins in late October / early November, we could expect it anytime in January-February.
I wish I had more news for you Strangers fans, but unfortunately there’s nothing but crickets on Lionsgate’s side with Strangers news. And unfortunately, as it’s not a bigger release like Scream, there’s not too many insiders who may have information or hints to share. Hopefully we’ll get something official soon — Renny Harlin is certainly excited based on his Instagram.
