Rumours

Rumours of a third film were fuelled at the end of 2021 when an anonymous sent a tip in to us that a new production company had bought the rights to the franchise. We sat on this news for a while and eventually shared it in 2022.

BACKSTORY

Madelaine Petsch revealed in an interview that this film would explore more of The Strangers origins and backstory as to why they do what they do, which she believes will please “OG fans”.

ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE

The first film in the trilogy was supposed to be released in August 2023, as revealed in an interview with Ryan Bown. However, numerous factors including the Writers Strike led to the release date being delayed.

CHARACTERISTICS

At New York Comic Con, Renny Harlin revealed the characteristics of The Strangers with Pin-Up Girl being clever, Scarecrow (formerly known as The Man in the Mask) being ruthless and the leader of the gang, and Dollface being playful.

LEAKED TRAILER

The trailer for Chapter 1 was intended to be debuted at Emerald City Comic Con 2024, however the trailer was leaked online by an unknown party and so Lionsgate decided to release it early.

"ENHANCEMENT" SHOOTS

Following the box office and critical reception of Chapter 1, it was decided to do reshoots for Chapter 2 to modify parts of the story based on the fan response. A week of Chapter 2 reshoots happened in Los Angeles in July-August 2024. Despite the reshoots having been completed and scenes from it being used in the Chapter 2 teaser, the film was still delayed over a year from its intended release to September 2024.

After finalising Chapter 2, filmmakers realised that the story for Chapter 3 needed to take the changes into account, so another two weeks of reshoots occurred in Toronto in March-April 2025.

NEW STRANGERS

The trilogy was set to introduce two new Strangers, Ghostskull and Witchface, as the cliffhanger ending of Chapter 2. This was leaked in the ending credits of Chapter 1. As of the release of Chapter 2, they have not been introduced and could have quite possibly been cut from the story.

FUTURE INSTALLMENTS

Renny Harlin has indicated that the trilogy was the beginning of a new universe of Strangers films. Given the poor reviews of the trilogy, and the negative box office return of Chapter 2, it’s unknown whether the films will continue beyond Chapter 3.
